How Did This Increase Come About?
On 14 February 2026, the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder (TdL) and the trade unions ver.di and dbb agreed on a new collective agreement. The deal provides for a total increase of 5.8 percent over the contract period, spread across three steps:

Student Employee Minimum Wage 2026
For student research assistants (SHK) at state institutions, the collective agreement (§ V) sets new minimum rates: €15.20/hour from summer semester 2026 and €15.90/hour from summer semester 2027. Contracts are normally concluded for one year.
East/West Harmonisation (from 1 January 2027)
Employees at university hospitals in the eastern salary area (Tarifgebiet Ost) benefit from a step-by-step reduction in weekly working hours:

Junior Staff Package from the Collective Agreement
- Takeover guarantee extended until 31 January 2028 (§ 19 TVA-L BBIG et al.) — in force since 1 March 2026
- Faster step progression: graduates taken on with at least "satisfactory" skip 6 months in Level 1
- Completion bonus: €500 for "very good/good" — €400 for "satisfactory/sufficient"
- Capital-forming benefits for trainees: €13.29/month
Annual Bonus (Christmas Pay) 2026
Employees in E13 receive a statutory annual bonus (§ 20 TV-L) of approx. 46.47 % of one monthly gross salary (paid in November). Example: Level 3 → approx. €2,494 · Level 5 → approx. €3,054.
